That's a good point. They do look like asterisks. Stupid way to use emphasis on a handwritten sign (too good to underline?), but whatever.
More worrisome is this person's lack of baseball knowledge. Among the acceptable answers to this question would be "because he's not a very good player," "because we got two good prospects for an average player we had no use for," "because the Dodgers valued him more than we did," and "the season was already over, dummy."
Those are undoubtedly quotation marks. I was with Beth at the game, and zoomed in on the original picture just to make sure. Definitely quotation marks. The question is: "Why" are they there?!?!?!?
djf is correct: they are quotation marks. The smaller size (and the fact that the camera had a smudge on the lens) blurs it a little bit, but they are most definitely qutoation marks.
I'm a Fire Joe Morgan sorta stat-guy... so I totally get the whole "Blake sucks" mentality... especially since his numbers actually declined after coming to LA... but I watch almost every game on television, and while he might not have had a LOT of hits, he had hits in important spots, and played the hell out of third base.
I can understand why someone was disappointed that Cleveland traded him (he's a "gamer"/"grinder"), but I can also respect that the Dodgers needed him more than Cleveland, and thus valued him more highly.
Carlos Santana and Jonathan Meloan aren't anything nearly as special as you might have heard though, so I don't regret the deal.
Meloan looks okay, but "I" could pitch well in the minor leagues, and Santana was a 22 year old single A guy. Older than Clayton Kershaw, and maybe even Dodger Ace Chad Billingsly.
It was one of those rare "both sides are happy" deals... rare because almost every trade these days is a money deal. One teams is out of the playoffs, and wants to unload some payroll, while another team is in the thick of the race, and needs another bat, or arm... no matter the cost.
Casey Blake was a great bandaid until we can get a "for real" third baseman... like, not ironically... Adrian Beltre, as long as the Mariners eat a few million per year on his contract. He might not be worth 13 million a year, but oh how I would love to have 25 homeruns a year out of the hot corner.
Because those aren't quote marks. Those are asterisks, commonly used for emphasis.

(end baseball rant)
They're probably quotation marks... but just used the wrong way. She probably used them for emphasis, not knowing any rules about grammar at all...
ReplyDeleteLadies and gentlemen, the question being asked should not be about whether or not those are quotes, but about why Sign-Holding Person has purple skin.
