I have been to many "auditions" so I can help decode this. Essentially, "audition" refers to a film that will never be made, but the director is desperately looking for a date. "Broadway" implies the dude's apartment.
I thought it meant, "Sure, they're AUDITIONS. We're casting people based on talent, not on whether they're our cronies/frat-buddies/fellow freemasons. Honest."
May be a combination of the two of course, and they really are casting for a play, but casting is determined by who the director would like to sleep with.
Alright, everyone, welcome to "auditions". Raise your hand if you are NOT a young beautiful female. Alright, if you just raised your hand, you can leave. The rest of you, please step into my office...
