9 of "10"


My husband spotted this one on a home depot run. I guess they kept asking people until they found 9 who were satisfied.

Actually, this one is easily explained. By varying the base of the counting system used, they can adjust the counting size needed. For example, in a Base 12 couning system, after nine would be A and B before reaching 10 to fill in for numbers not expressed in the arabic system we use. Base 16 can have A through F, and so on.
So, to achieve 9 out of 10, you just need to keep asking until you reach nine people, declare the total number of people asked as the base of the counting system, and you have 9 out of 10!
