I would argue that this is an appropriate use of quotation marks, since they are using a pun. It's not very funny, but would probably pass for correct grammar.
I think it might have worked better if they just put "lot" in quotation marks. Placing the phrase "a lot" in quotation marks is dangerously close to "alot" in my book - the separation of those two words (and the use of the noun "lot" meaning of course a group or several) is slowly being lost in modern English
Please send your submissions via email to bethanykeeley (at) gmail.com. I look at them all, but it might take a while to get to yours -- sorry! I love you all, but I only have so much energy in a day.
If you want your picture to make the blog DO NOT @tweet them, or leave them in a comment. I need them all in the same place. Make sure your emails are easily distinguishable from spam or viruses (I use gmail web interface, so images get previews).
I don't usually post the following: newspaper headlines, personal email, craigslist postings, unprofessional websites. I also tend to not crosspost things from other blogs, since I have so much unique material waiting for me to get to it.
Things I see a lot: silica gel "do not eat"; hair dryer labels; inside the bus "do not drill"; Wal-mart sign about IDs; coffee machine with "2" cup sizes; employees must "wash hands"; that failblog post.

Gotta give them credit for not writing "alot"....although if they hadn't been making a pun, they might have...
Yeah, that was a bit harsh: it was done intentionally, as a joke.
... I even kinda like it. :D
Definitely not an error on this one, just lame :)

I don't have a problem with this one.
I'd have to agree with previous comments. This is a lame joke rather than an incorrect use of quotation marks.
