you know, "the gate"

Kelly's dad, Wayne, took this picture at his marina. She adds this story: "He actually spoke to the man who had written the sign, and apparently the addition of quotation marks was in response to how many people came up to ask him whether the gate was, in fact, closed, as he was writing the sign that told them so."
What? That makes no sense and I love it.

What confuses me is how I'm invited to "please use the other two gate".
Is there one other gate, or two?

I think I'll just crawl under the police tape here...

well, the guy told kelly's dad, who told kelly, who told you, who told us. there's a chance the story got turned around a bit.

well, I copy-pasted Kelly's email, so that's one fewer step actually. Also, the sign is still funny.

It's kind of like drawing a speech bubble around it. "Is the gate really closed?" "Yes, that's what I'm saying, and the sign makes it official."

I wonder what kinds of "expressions" people were wearing when they asked the author if the gate was really closed...
