i'd like to bring attention to the poorly spaced and unnecessary hyphen and the awesome spelling job at the end there. you figure at least one of the employees at the establishment would say something. if only there were as many grammar nazis in RL as there are online. and they say that the internet is killing the english language.
Yeah, but... sometimes the quotes are actually correctly used. "Not working" is a quote from the person that requested the sign.... or maybe the sign maker thought that wasn't really the accurate description.
Now, if it was: Not "Working", that would be different...
I just discovered your blog. I'm so happy to know I'm not alone about hating random quotation marks. I've always wanted to track down the sign makers and ask what they think the quotation marks mean. Thanks for giving me a forum to vent my quotation mark frustration!
Please send your submissions via email to bethanykeeley (at) gmail.com. I look at them all, but it might take a while to get to yours -- sorry! I love you all, but I only have so much energy in a day.
If you want your picture to make the blog DO NOT @tweet them, or leave them in a comment. I need them all in the same place. Make sure your emails are easily distinguishable from spam or viruses (I use gmail web interface, so images get previews).
I don't usually post the following: newspaper headlines, personal email, craigslist postings, unprofessional websites. I also tend to not crosspost things from other blogs, since I have so much unique material waiting for me to get to it.
Things I see a lot: silica gel "do not eat"; hair dryer labels; inside the bus "do not drill"; Wal-mart sign about IDs; coffee machine with "2" cup sizes; employees must "wash hands"; that failblog post.

It’s in Comic Sans, too…

Did you notice "inconvience" as well? Not quoted, but another problem the poster-maker seems to possess.
