distressing

Amanda explains: "Thai chicken fried rice is my favourite food in the word. I was alarmed when I received this dish from a wonderful local Thai eatery in a box labeled "C" F R. Given that Asian restaurants are often accused of substituting furry friends for other meats, one would think they'd want to avoid such dodgy PR. I pray these quotation marks were unnecessary."

Distressing indeed. Almost as bad, though, if this order were for Amanda and they were doing a bit of name calling in her direction. Nobody wants to be called a "C" after all.

Perhaps the quotes are to prevent people from thinking that the chicken was the one who fried the rice?

In my experience the amount of meat usually included in fried rice is so minimal as to be in question whether it's there at all. So perhaps it's part of 'truth in advertising'

Conventionally, quotation marks within quoted text should be represented as inverted commas, the little quotation-mark things with only one dash ('). This and several other of the posts on this site fail to observe this convention. For a blog dedicated to what it deems the improper use of quotation-marks, this strikes me as, at the least, ironic.

I think that fried rice is so minimal.

anaximander: if you read my FAQ you will realize that I am no grammar expert. I know the convention, but sometimes forget about it when I copy and paste in a hurry. This blog is not my full time job, so I try to keep its demands on my time to a minimum.

I think it was an attempt at drawing a face, not unnecessary quotes (just this once..)

And here I thought it was funny that chicken fried rice was her favorite food in the word.
