a seasonal link

Since we in the US are celebrating Thanksgiving today by eating a lot, I thought it was an apt time to share this website, which is a smart way to help feed others. Their ad revenue is donated to UN food programs to feed the hungry. PLUS it's a fun vocabulary game. If you're competitive like me you can try to get to higher levels than your loved ones. My record so far is 42.

41... but i'll keep trying. i don't really get these types of things though. we're not legitimately earning anything, so why don't they just make the donation and skip the web site? i guess maybe the ad revenue from all the people on the site helps pay for it.... but the sort of people participating in a vocabulary game probably aren't the type to click a bunch of banner ads.

what would really make this game interesting is if they took rice AWAY from the poor if you did badly.

many ads (such as the BlogHer ads on my site) pay by page impression. So you earn money for the site owners simply by visiting. Maybe you'll feel inclined to spend money with the sponsors, because they support a charity site. It's the same principle going on at thehungersite.com
However, counting up grains is deceptive because they earn money from your eyeballs whether or not you are winning.

How fun, "thanks" for that link! I got to level 47, and 800 "grains" donated.

46 and 1060 grains.
Thanks! That's really fun.
I showed this website to a friend who added it to his blogroll for his technical writing class. You guys rock!

you can donate a lot more rice by getting the first few wrong and starting on level 1. took me 1700 grains of rice to get to level 42 (which i finally did do).

47! that's insane.

I really enjoy your site and I too visit the website you mentioned. I got to level 45 but that included a couple of good guesses.
Inappropriate "quotation" marks have always been a "thing" of mine and to find a site that agrees with me is very consoling!

45, but now I'm addicted - to that game and your blog. Both excellent for English majors!

It's just a hookwind, no money can possibly be generated from banner ads that you couldn't just donate yourself. Come on people, this is 2007.

stop being a killjoy. Of COURSE you could donate the money yourself, but this way you get to play a fun game. I play games anyway.

ooh 42, but it took a while to beat 41. i wonder how high the vocab levels go.

ok 45 & 47 scorers and the like, i expect impressive vocab in your comments from now on, or else it's a dictionary.com disqualification for you!
