Ouch. This one just hurts.Possible a greatest hit?
Are those cigarettes also "Cheaper than Cheaper?"
Well, if it`s cheaper than cheaper then it must be the cheapest!
WOW. I want a miniature of this one for my apartment.
Wouldn't you think someone in the process of making that sign would have notice the improper use of "your"? (Hope that isn't an unnecessary quotation mark.)
The only way this one could be better were if they were "cheaper then cheaper".
I can't look... your vs. you're... do you think they skipped the 3rd grade?
this...is...incredible.i wish everything was cheaper than cheaper.
I agree with anonymous. "Then" might have made this the absolute greatest sign in the history of the planet.
I agree, this one needs to be a greatest hit. I know we argue about putting the slogan in quotation marks, but I think this is the first time I've seen only half of the slogan in quotation marks! And don't get me started on your vs. you're.Though, in their "defense", the cigarette sign contains a translation into another language, so this company may be run by people who's first language is not English, and operates in a part of town where that's pretty common.Along this line, I also think we should contact our senators about giving every person who applies for citizenship and/or a business license a copy of "Eats Shoots and Leaves".
I think the misuse of the word "your" bothers me a lot more than "Cheaper than cheaper." Although that's pretty bad too.
That's quite possibly the most painful thing I've ever read.
hey, that's on clement street in san francisco. all of the billboards in the area are in languages that don't use the roman alphabet.
oh my goodness!i was trying to figure out how to contact you in order to send you my photo of cheaper then cheaper. i live in the richmond district and this sign makes me laugh every single time.i love your posts and blog!
i am also surprised they correctly spelled "a lot"
Can't...stop...laughing! Loved the sign and the comments. Thanks for posting everyone--you made my day!
Bwah haha! That is classic! My best friend Carrie and I have always had this little onrunning joke we'll blog about from time to time. We call it "The South: The Land of Unnecessary Apostrophe's." We've been doing it for years, but I should totally start my own blog!Keep on "doing" what "your" doing, haha!!
no one mentioned "Smile,your..." lacks the proper spacing. that really irks me,too.i really like the idea of "cheaper then cheaper." it's really honest about the immediate depreciation of buying stuff.
I'm impressed they used "a lot" instead of "alot." It's actually almost disappointing.I don't blame the store at all, surely English is not their first language. But it seems like the sign company could pay a high school graduate to do a quick once-over before something goes to press... or whatever you call it with signs.
the saving...it is yours.
@andi: And don't get me started on who's vs. whose. :-)
OMG, you are toooo funny. I used to work with a woman who frequently made quotation marks with her fingers to emphasize words while she spoke. Drove me crazy.
Ahahahaha. I laugh every time I walk past this one, which is often, because I live two blocks away from it.I love this blog.
Wow, now that's a bonafide head-slapper. It's the kind of sign you look at and can't help but think "how in the hell did that happen?" I blame the internet. Damn you, internet!
It's obviously in a Chinatown of sorts, so I'm willing to excuse the people who run the store.
Hehehe I love it. Love this whole site in fact - just found it today from a link in the A Word a Day email newsletter. Keep them coming!
actually "cheaper then cheaper" makes real sense... as though it just KEEPS ON getting cheaper! waaaiit... CHEAPER!
Definitely my favorite! "Your saving" really gets me.
I think there is a store down the street named Cheaper Tobacco and they just wanted to let their customers know that they are cheaper than the competition so they called their store "Cheaper then Cheaper"
I dare not try to offer an interpretation, for fear it might damage my "grammar" permentantly"."
Priceless.... I think the best part of it is the small "we sell cheap cigarettes" sign attached.... not only did they make the effort to come up with such an incongruous sign, but then after they hung it up they realized it didn´t say anywhere what they actually did sell...
Maybe this sign is for a dentist and includes a quote from Yoda: "Smile, you are saving!"
